General information

Internships are training experiences that are directly linked to your study path and career objectives. They can be completed both during and after your studies.

Why are they important?
• to test out and practically apply on the job what you have learned on the books

• to assess your natural inclination towards certain activities or others

• to experience a business reality and find out just how it is structured and organised

• to interface directly with professionals who can monitor you step-by-step

• to enrich your curriculum vitae

• to be known, appreciated and potentially employed at a later stage

• to gain training credits (if envisaged by the study plan)

The Politecnico di Milano manages post-graduate internship periods up to 12 months from your graduation date. Beyond 12 months, you will need to refer to alternative promoting bodies.

For those who have attained a Specializing Master Degree or PhD, the same procedure applies as for graduates.

How to identify an internship period

You can:

A. Examine the offers shown on the Career Service website:  job board for graduates

Having identified an offer, you can apply by accessing using the same codes as for webpoliself. If your profile meets the research underway, the company concerned will contact you for an interview.

B. Identify it by means of your direct contact with a company.

In the event of a successful interview

In the event of a successful interview

A. If it is an internship period found through the career service notice boards.

To formalise the internship period you will need to ask the company to log in and complete the form on the page "Activate an internship" with your data (name, surname, student registration number).

You will receive an e-mail from the Career Service stating that the offer has been entered by the company and providing all the information you need to proceed.

B. If it is an internship period organised with a company found through your contacts

First check that the company/organisation has a Work Experience Agreement in place with the Politecnico di Milano.

Should this not be the case, you will not be able to activate an internship period under the sponsorship of our University.

The procedure by which to arrange an Agreement is as follows:

1. The company must access the company area and register.

2. Following registration, the company will obtain the access codes needed to, amongst the various services available, apply for the Work Experience Agreement (legal requirement). The agreement process is managed entirely on-line.

3. Once the Agreement with the Politecnico di Milano has been signed, the company will need to log in and complete the form on the page  "Activate an internship".

You will receive an e-mail from the Career Service stating that the offer has been entered by the company and providing all the information you need to proceed

Now deliver the training project

Once you have received the e-mail with the training project, print out 3 copies, sign them and ask you company tutor to also sign them. The 3 signed copies must be delivered as follows:

• 2 to the Career Service help desk 3 working days prior to the internship period start date

What to do when the internship period is over

Post-graduate internship periods automatically come to an end on the date scheduled and do not require conclusive reports unless you wish to receive a certificate of internship period completion.

In this case, you will need to deliver the internship period final reports (yours and that of your company tutor) to the Career Service help desk.

FAQs

How can I choose an academic tutor?

For some degree programmes, the student himself chooses a Politecnico Professor who will act as his tutor for the internship period. In this case, we would suggest contacting your thesis supervisor or a Professor with whom you have had contact during your studies. Alternatively, you can ask for a suggestion from the “SAT – Struttura Accademica di Tirocinio” for your course (complete list available from www.careerservice.polimi.it/sat ).

What can I do to extend an internship period?

Only the host company/organisation can request the extension of an internship period. They can do so by using a form available from the heading “Summary of your company’s internshis” – in the “Companies” section.

How long can an internship period last?

Internship periods have a maximum duration of 6 months, regardless of the number of extensions.

How can I interrupt an internship period?

Early interruption of the internship period must be notified by the host company/organisation by their sending an e-mail to careerservice.stage@polimi.it – with reference, in the subject line, to the name, surname and student registration number of the internship.

Who am I insured by during the internship period?

The Promoter (Politecnico di Milano) takes responsibility for insuring you against accidents and for civil liability.

Details of the relevant policies are given in the training project.
