General information

Internships are training experiences that are directly linked to your study path and career objectives. They can be completed both during and after your studies.

Why are they important?
• to test out and practically apply on the job what you have learned on the books

• to assess your natural inclination towards certain activities or others

• to experience a business reality and find out just how it is structured and organised

• to interface directly with professionals who can monitor you step-by-step

• to enrich your curriculum vitae

• to be known, appreciated and potentially employed at a later stage

• to gain training credits (if envisaged by the study plan)

STUDENT INTERNSHIP PERIODS

Curricular: This falls during the student’s study course and accounts for a certain number of university training credits (CFUs) as envisaged by the study plan.

In order to activate a curricular internship period, you will need the approval of the “SAT - Struttura Accademica di Tirocinio” for your study course. The duration of the curricular internship period is pre-established according to the commitment required to attain the CFUs envisaged in terms of hours, by the individual Study Courses. It is completed with a final assessment of achievement performed by the academic tutor.

Extra-curricular: This type of internship period is a professionally-orientated training experience that you can choose to carry out at a public/private body or company in agreement with the Politecnico di Milano.

In this case too, to activate the internship period you will need the approval of the SAT Manager for your study course.

How to identify an internship period

You can:

A. Examine the offers shown on the Career Service website: internship board

Having identified an offer, you can apply by accessing using the same codes as for webpoliself. If your profile meets the research underway, the company concerned will contact you for an interview.

B. Identify it by means of your direct contact with a company.

In the event of a successful interview

A. If it is an internship period found through the career service notice boards.

Once you have been interviewed and received notice of success from the company concerned, the procedure varies depending on whether it is a student or graduate internship period.

Contact your SAT

To formalise the internship period (both curricular and extra-curricular) you will need to make contact with your degree programme SAT Manager (SAT – Internship Academic Structure - Manager) to obtain approval of the internship and the e-mail (to your @polimi.it address) containing the relevant training project. This will contain the following information: your personal data, training and academic objectives, the name of your academic tutor and company tutor, details of insurance coverage, the duration and place where the internship period is to take place.

Should you experience any difficulty in identifying a tutor, you can contact the SAT of your degree programme for advice (www.careerservice.polimi.it/sat). Once you have chosen a tutor and decided on the start and end date for the internship period, send an e-mail with this information to careerservice.stage@polimi.it.

B. If it is an internship period organised with a company found through your contacts

First check that the company/organisation has a Work Experience Agreement in place with the Politecnico di Milano.

Should this not be the case, you will not be able to activate an internship period under the sponsorship of our University.

The procedure by which to arrange an Agreement is as follows:

1. The company must access the company area and register.

2. Following registration, the company will obtain the access codes needed to, amongst the various services available, apply for the Work Experience Agreement (legal requirement). The agreement process is managed entirely on-line.

3. Once the Agreement with the Politecnico di Milano has been signed, the company will need to log in and complete the form on the page “Have you already found a candidate for your internship?”. This will allow for the sending of the training project that you will receive in your @polimi.it mailbox.

Before entering the proposal in the Career Service portal, you will need to first request approval of the training offer by your SAT

If you are a student of Design, Architecture Leonardo Campus or Architecture Mantova Campus, we would ask that you follow the specific instructions given by your degree programme on the matter.

What to do when the internship period is over

Once the internship period has come to an end, you can download and complete the conclusive report form directly from the website, under “Your internships”. The same procedure must also be completed by the relevant host company/organisation (the form can be downloaded from the website under the heading “summary of your company’s internships” – in the “Companies” section).

Both reports must be delivered to the SAT of reference to allow your academic tutor to register any credits as may be recognised.

PLEASE REMEMBER TO CHECK DIRECTLY WITH YOUR SAT AS TO HOW TO PROCEED BEFORE PREPARING YOUR REPORT.

If you are a student of Design, Architecture Leonardo Campus or Architecture Mantova Campus, or of Electrical Engineering, please follow the specific instructions given by your degree programme on the matter.

FAQs

How can I choose an academic tutor?

For some degree programmes, the student himself chooses a Politecnico Professor who will act as his tutor for the internship period. In this case, we would suggest contacting your thesis supervisor or a Professor with whom you have had contact during your studies. Alternatively, you can ask for a suggestion from the “SAT – Struttura Accademica di Tirocinio” for your course (complete list available from www.careerservice.polimi.it/sat ).

What can I do to extend an internship period?

Only the host company/organisation can request the extension of an internship period. They can do so by using a form available from the heading “Summary of your company’s internshis” – in the “Companies” section.

How long can an internship period last?

Internship periods have a maximum duration of 12 months, regardless of the number of extensions.

How can I interrupt an internship period?

Early interruption of the internship period must be notified by the host company/organisation by their sending an e-mail to careerservice.stage@polimi.it – with reference, in the subject line, to the name, surname and student registration number of the internship.

Who am I insured by during the internship period?

The Promoter (Politecnico di Milano) takes responsibility for insuring you against accidents and for civil liability.

Details of the relevant policies are given in the training project.
